High Cholesterol and Migraines – Is There a Connection?

I was recently diagnosed with high cholesterol, and I've been wondering if it could be connected to my migraines. Has anyone else experienced both conditions? If so, did lowering your cholesterol through diet, exercise, or medication have any effect on your migraine frequency or severity?
I'd also like to know if anyone can recommend a medication or treatment that has helped manage high cholesterol without making migraines worse. I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences, any advice, and what has worked best for you. Thanks in advance!

  1. Hi , while you're waiting for feedback from the community, I wanted to share a few articles I found:

I hope there is something helpful for you in them. - Warmly, Donna (Team Member?

  2. A few studies suggest shared vascular and inflammatory pathways between high cholesterol and migraines, though the mechanisms are not yet fully understood. Anecdotally, many people notice that lifestyle changes for cholesterol, better sleep, less processed food, regular exercise, also ease migraine frequency, likely because both conditions respond to lower inflammation. As for medication, that's really worth discussing directly with your doctor, since some cholesterol meds affect people with migraines differently, and it can take some trial and monitoring to find the right fit.

  3. Sorry to hear you're dealing with both. My GP prescribed me atorvastatin for my high cholesterol, and I personally didn't notice it making my migraines worse while I was taking it. Of course, everyone responds differently, so it's worth discussing the different statin options with your GP if you're concerned about side effects.
